Amidst the horror and inanity there is Fearless Fosdick
Am I the only one following this resurrected cartoon strip? I hope not. But in case you are wondering, Fearless Fosdick was Lil Abner's favorite cartoon strip character, and Lil Abner has always been one of mine. My sanity and equanimity are given a daily boost by reading the "funnies" on Go Comic. In the last year Lil Abner has joined this app's offerings. The episode I am currently following dates from 1948. Lil Abner continues to spurn Daisy Mae's amorous attentions and indulges exclusively in his favorite dissipation, reading the exploits of Fearless Fosdick. A cartoon within a cartoon.
What makes Fearless Fosdick so amusing is the sheer inanity of the story line. Fosdick, the bravest and smartest detective to ever live (step back Foyle, step back Columbo, step back Dick Tracy) has been shamed and put out to pasture for insisting that the mastermind criminal behind a murderous crime spree is a...Chippendale Chair. We, the readers, know that Fosdick is correct. His bumble-headed superiors are confident that he is bumble-headed. The Chippendale Chair is quite content, having fooled them all, and having assured that his accuser is discredited. So the Chair revels in his criminal glory, with a luscious dame in his lap. The subordinate thugs who work for the chair despair that they do not work for a more conventional boss.
It is all too good to be true. Will Fosdick be reinstated? Will the Chair get what's coming to him? Will Daisy Mae ever get Lil Abner?
