In and Around - A visit from Porky
North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum)
This fellow, or a family member, has been hanging around our home for as long as we've been here. I spotted this one as he/she was climbing up a small beech tree near our barn. It seems that the beech bark up about fifteen feet was particularly appealing. When I came out he/she began to descend the tree (where the picture story begins) and came toward me and then ambled (no other speed possible) down to home turf on the edge of the swamp. An overturned garden wagon provided a moment's relief.
